Grade A Herkimer Diamond crystals are all but perfect gemstones. All are double terminated quartz crystals with 18 natural facets. Small inclusions and rainbows or tiny attachment marks may also occur, but none will exceed 7-10% of the overall specimen. Grade A Herkimer quartz crystals have beautiful clarity and are an excellent value.

There are several methods for collecting Herkimer quartz. The most strenuous involves using chisels, picks and crowbars and spending a few days at one spot, digging your way into a portion of the dolomite mine wall. Determination and some luck can yield a pocket in the Dolomite rock, filled with quartz crystal gemstones. These pockets, or vugs are often lined with the sparkling drusy quartz as well.
