As the photographs show, this is another perfect Herkimer Diamond.
There’s much local lore on how the diamonds were first discovered. One story claims that a couple of Revolutionary War soldiers found some loose water clear crystals in the dirt. They truly thought they were real diamonds and were sure they had struck it rich. When word spread to their commanding officer, General Herkimer, he thought to help finance the war with the diamonds. After a mineralogist examined the gemstones, alas, they were proved to be merely quartz crystals. It's a good thing New Yorker's have strong backs and stronger will's!
The photographs show the excellent clarity and shine of this Herkimer quartz crystal. It is easy to imagine those soldiers thought them to be true diamonds. It's also ironic that at this time in history, even a General in the Revolutionary war didn't know immediately a real diamond is not found naturally faceted. |
