AA Grade Herkimer Diamond

Length: 9 mm
Width: 7.25 mm
Depth: 4.75 mm
Weight: 1.6 ct.
Notes:

This quality Herkimer quartz crystal is water clear with clean double terminations. A double terminated crystal is a crystal that is naturally terminated on both ends (pointed). These crystals didn't grow and attach to the matrix like other quartz crystals. They form by crystallizing inside vugs or pockets without attracting or attaching to the matrix rock.
Small, clear geometric key marks (one can be seen in the photograph) are present. A key mark is recognized by a geometric indentation that is usually three or six-sided. It becomes more narrow as it steps into the crystal. It's the impression where it grew against another crystal, but didn't attach. The keyed crystal grew at a later date, around the original crystal, the step-like pattern indicating the growth pattern. They also add authenticity to the Herkimer Diamond.

Herkimer Diamonds were formed by tremendous heat 300-500 million years ago beneath a shallow sea bed of the rock dolomite, now New York state. The dolomite began as limestone and calcite rock, and while still under water, magnesium was added. This new addition created the sedimentary rock called dolomite. Pockets and vugs within the dolomite were filled with fluid rich in silicon dioxide, or quartz, providing the material to allow the clear crystals to form. One explanation as to the double terminations points of Herkimer's is that the fluid filled pockets allowed them to form freely, providing the opportunity to terminate on both ends. Another explanation to the double termination's is silica has no attraction to the dolomite rock and avoids attachment to it.
