Notes:

This Herkimer floater with a teeny seed crystal is completely natural and rare. The seed crystal is captured in several of the photographs and needs a loupe to be fully appreciated.
Less than 5% of Herkimer's mined are AA grade quality, and even less of these are floater crystals. The average size of a flawless AA grade Herkimer Diamond is 6-8 mm, so this 10.5 mm is rare.
All AA grade Herkimer's are naturally double terminated, a crystal that is pointed on both ends. These crystals don’t grow by attaching to a matrix rock like other quartz crystals do, they have repelled away from the matrix, or host rock. They are called floater crystals, as they crystallized inside the vugs or pockets without touching the host rock. This is quite rare and has to do with the much lower content of silicon in the dolomite (Herkimer host rock).
This Herkimer floater with tiny seed crystal was formed more than 300 million years ago !
