Characteristics of a B grade Herkimer quartz crystal gemstones include good overall appearance, clarity, and double termination points. Some cloudiness, inclusions and internal fractures are present. They will also have larger attachment marks than an A grade gem.
Herkimer quartz crystals are mined using different techniques. Some of the gemstones pictured on this page were found loose in the soil. After a rainstorm and with the sun shining is the ideal time to search for stones this way. After the rain washes away the top layer of dirt, the crystals will glisten quite brightly in the sunlight. Follow the water crevices down the sides of dump piles. Gem stones loosened in the dirt can tumble down along these these cracks. This is the least strenuous method for collecting these double terminated quartz crystals.
