Beautiful sparkle and a cool anthraxolite inclusions feature in this group of Herkimer crystals. Sizes and descriptions are:
- The smallest gemstone (pictures below) measures 17x12.25x10.5 mm. All faces are smooth and the double termination points are clean. Healed internal fractures glitter pastel rainbows.
- One 18.75x14x10 mm (also pictured below) Herkimer crystal with a smoky hue. The rainbows are stronger in this gemstone. It is "all but" double terminated, a tiny ding can be seen with a loupe on one termination. Well over 90% of the crystal is smooth and complete.
- The largest Herkimer crystal in the group (pictures above) measures 20.5x15x12 mm. It has three awesome anthraxolite inclusions. Anthraxolite is decayed plant material that fossilized. This quartz formed millions of years ago in what was a shallow sea bed; now the middle of New York state. What makes the concentrations of anthraxolite so unique is the round shape. The one seen in the top picture is about 4 mm. At least 90% of this gemstone is smooth and complete. One of the termination tips is sharp and clear.
Healed fractures and growth occurrences are abundant in all the Herkimer crystals in this group, allowing for the sparkle of rainbows. A healed fracture occurred during the crystal's formation. Something caused a crack, or hesitation in growth. As the crystal continued to grow, the fracture was encased within the gemstone, thus 'healing' it. |
