Spectacular! This sensational Herkimer Diamond specimen is large with excellent clarity. Over 80% of this crystal is water clear. The images reflect all the interesting things going on near one of the terminations. Different background experiments yielded great images, they are both shown.
Most of the reflections come from several clear key and a hopper impressions as well as bridge crystals located near the pointed tip.
A bridge crystal is recognized as a smaller crystal which is part in and part out of a larger crystal. The larger crystal formed, or "flowed" around the smaller crystal which was already completely formed. This specimen has two bridge crystals, both double terminated and water clear; one with an extraordinary surprise. They are nestled amongst the hopper and key markings, the smaller bridge measuring 6x3.5 mm. The larger measures 8x6 mm and has a tiny fluid filled seed crystal in it's center! Commonly called an enhydro, a tiny speck of hydrocarbon floats back and forth. Easily seen with a loupe; look into the larger facets and rock the stone gently back and forth. Amazing! A light trace of iron oxide surrounds the bridge crystals, casting a rich hue.
Surrounding the bridge crystals are key and hopper imprints. A key mark is an imprint left from another Herkimer Diamond that grew along side the crystal and didn't adhere. It has a defined 3-6 sided geometric shape that steps into the crystal. Hopper markings aren't always so geometric. They show rapid, wild growth; like the crystal couldn't keep up with itself.
Overall the Herkimer Diamond has a smoky hue, however,it's not nearly as intense as the images portray. This is attributed to the small specks of hydrocarbon found both internally and externally at this same termination.
Other clear inclusions and bubbles are present.
The other termination of this impressive quartz specimen is water clear. It has a large chisel point. This type of termination is defined by a flat edge rather than a 'point'. It give the crystal a 'Superman' shape, really cool.
It is a complete double terminated crystal with many large smooth facets. It fits and feels great in your palm.
With it's fluid filled seed enhydro, double terminated bridge crystals, beautiful hue, and very large size for such excellent clarity, this is a remarkable Herkimer Diamond specimen.
