| Notes: |
Although external matrix markings are present, these are two oversized
tabby crystals. A Tabby or Tabular Crystal is recognized
as a flat crystal, usually with etching or notches (major striations)
on one side. Herkimer Diamonds did not traditionally grow with this
narrow shape.
Descriptions from left to right in above photos:
- One 45x30x15.5 mm tabular crystal. At almost 2",
this is one of the largest tabby crystals I have seen. The crystal
is double terminated, but one tip is chipped. The largest flat
facet does have matrix scarring. The other side has mainly internal
matrix. The cloudiness is attributed to the many healed internal
fractures. A healed fracture occurred when the stone formed. Something
caused a crack, but the crystal formed completely around it, healing
it.
- One 25x20x9.5 mm tabby crystal. Along with a tabular
shape, this crystal has a skewed as well. Both long flat sides
have external matrix speckled on the large facets. Internal fractures
give the stone some cloudiness. Both termination points are intact
and sharp.
This is an appealing set of 2 unusual Herkimer Diamond crystals.
