This Herkimer has an elongated shape.

Photograph of a quartz crystal.

A rainbow is slightly captured in this picture.

One Herkimer Diamond

Length: 47.5 mm
Width: 25 mm
Depth: 18.5 mm
Notes: This long quartz crystal has a chisel tip. A common termination point occurs when six faces (or facets) join together to form a point. An alternate is when the facets come together with a flat edge. This is not as common, and referred to as a chisel tip. It can be seen quite clearly in the pictures.
Also apparent is the cloudiness of the crystal, due to the many internally healed fractures and growth occurrences. The upside to this is the abundant rainbows created.
Several facets on this Herkimer quartz crystal are long and smooth. A really nice crystal to hold.

When the Dutch settled the land around Herkimer County, NY, they found the Herkimer quartz crystals in the soil and matrix stone of dolomite. Thinking they were actual diamonds, they were used for currency for a time. Alas, it was soon discovered the Herkimer Diamond was merely quartz, but it is one the most spectacular quartz crystals Mother Nature created.
