This thin piece of matrix is encrusted with smoky Herkimer Diamonds and druse. The clear crystals, at least 2 dozen of them, range in size from 7 mm on down.
The crystals are attached to what was the inside wall of a pocket.
Herkimer crystals were formed beneath a shallow sea bed. As water seeped thorough the pores of the dolomite rock, areas dissolved, creating pockets, or vug's. It is inside these vug's the gemstones formed. Some suggest these pockets were a result of Cryptozoon or some other type of sea plant life being covered by sediments and eventually decomposing, leaving voids in the rock.
Rainbows glisten throughout this beautiful piece of smoky Herkimer Diamonds and druse crystals. The thin crust of dolomite host rock gives the piece a flat bottom, allowing it to display perfectly. |
