A full double terminated quartz bridge crystal. A double terminated crystal is quartz that is naturally terminated on both ends (pointed). These crystals don’t grow on a matrix like other crystals do, and are sometimes called floaters. This is a result of the crystals growing with very little or no contact with their host rock. Doubly terminated crystals are very rare. One of the tips on this crystal is large, sharp, clear and well defined. The other termination point has a 13x9 mm bridge crystal next to it.
Internally, clouds of anthraxolite along with small bits of anthraxolite seem surrounded by crystal. Possibly the beginnings of manifestations? Anthraxolite is a carbon mineral, and is the remnants of fossilized plant life. The anthraxolite gives a deep hue to the overall quartz gemstone. Other interesting inclusions are present as well. It's a real treat to look at with a loupe.
Glittery rainbows I was fortunate enough to photograph, spark deep within this double terminated quartz crystal. There is really a great feel to this special Herkimer Diamond. |
