Mining Herkimer Diamonds yields many surprises, but this is the one everyone's looking for, a "pièce de résistance". What makes this quartz crystal so atypical is it's size along with very good clarity and double termination points. It also feels fantastic.
Externally, both termination points are sharp and complete. Over 90% of the facets are complete and smooth. An external matrix mark is seen in the photograph above and adds authenticity to the fact this stone has never been touch by machinery of any kind.
Internally, there are a couple things going on. The internal growth occurrences reflect much more strongly in the photos than in person. Several translucent 'fingerprint' inclusions strike rainbows in several facets. Other inclusions look clear and solid.
This large, clear double terminated quartz crystal would be prized in any collection.
