Here is a Herkimer Diamond specimen with a well defined hopper pattern on the bottom of the stone. See the pictures above.
A hopper crystal grew rapidly in stages. Each time new growth started and stopped, a step occurred. At termination you have a crystal that looks like it grew wildly in different directions stepping down to a center point. This pattern is external and is also referred to as 'negative skeletal' quartz. The hopper pattern in this crystal is fairly well defined and geometric. It steps down to a triangle.
This Herkimer Diamond specimen has much more than it's hopper pattern going on.
As can be in the pictures below, a large area on the top of the gem has iron oxide trapped within it, giving it 'golden healer' properties and a rich golden hue.
Along side the golden hue is a deep smokiness. This is due to the hydrocarbon present. This hydrocarbon, also called anthraxolite, it is present in crystallized form as well, both inside and out. Due to the unusual hue, the color veils are vivid.
There are some nice clear areas in this Herkimer Diamond specimen.
Externally, half of the crystal has facets, the other half the hopper pattern. Facets present for the most part are smooth.
A sharp tipped bridge crystal extends from one of the top facets. It must surely be double terminated, and measures 27.5x22.5x18 mm, larger than an inch. The point has good clarity, much better than the pictures show.
The size of this Herkimer Diamond is perfect for holding in the hand and it feels powerful. The hopper pattern gives it a flat bottom allowing it to set nicely on a shelf. It's a fun surprise to pick up the specimen and turn it over.
It is an unusual Herkimer Diamond specimen. |
