This spectacular B grade cluster of Herkimer Diamonds includes includes 7 quartz crystals in all. Two large double terminated (dt) take center stage. Nested between them set five smaller crystals.
The largest dt Herkimer measures 40x33 mm, it's clarity is pretty good. Many small inclusions look cool with a loupe. An oil slick like rainbow comes from a large, clear inclusion.
The 34.5x30 mm Herkimer Diamond has sharp double points. Because the back of the cluster is coated with anthraxolite (black hydrocarbon), the crystal has a rich, smoky color. Clarity is excellent at one point, cloudy at the other. Rainbows sparkle in this area. A bit of calcite is found on the back of this point also.
The five smaller quartz crystals are really not that small. A 14 mm and two 12 mm's are both double terminated. A 10 mm sharp point and a 5 mm dt tuck into the cluster. A thin layer of iron oxide is captured beneath them. The golden color shines through these water clear Herkimer's. The images above try to capture it, but it's much prettier in person.
The entire piece shows better in person, although the images do a pretty good job of doing it justice.
With it's mixture of bright and smoky hues; incredible inclusions and areas of excellent clarity it's a unique Herkimer Diamond quartz crystal cluster. It's tough to put it down.
