A huge 2016 solstice Herkimer crystal specimen!
A rare event occurred during the 2016 Summer Solstice. Not
seen since 1967; we enjoyed a full moon on the same day.
Coined the Strawberry Moon by the Algonquin tribes because
June’s full moon signaled the beginning of the strawberry
picking season. This Herkimer Diamond was charged outside
during that 3 day solstice period - June 20 - 23, 2016.
It is a complete double terminated D grade Herkimer
crystal. One point is complete and sharp with many large
smooth facets leading to it. Pastel rainbows sparkle in
the many of them, due to healed fractures and inclusions
The other tip is blemished. A 24x20 mm bridge crystal
formed nearby. While not well formed, it's clearly seen in
several images.
The images also show several growth marks; formed as the
large quartz crystal grew into the dolomite matrix rock
surrounding the vug.
Also present is a touch of dolomite dog's tooth crystal
(seen near the bridge crystal on image below).
Over 50% of facets, or faces, are smooth. One has some
interesting striation marks (see the squareish facet with
a reflection in the image below).
This huge Herkimer solstice crystal specimen might be
cloudy, but it's wonderful to hold. Since Mother Earth
created it, over 300 million years ago, no one but myself
and my husband have ever touched it.
